There is nothing like a friend who will go to any length to help! My friend, Micki, was right by my side every step of the way with the rescue we came upon today. We found a cat who had been cast aside and was starving, matted all over, covered with burrs and literally skin and bones. She was living outside a small business north of town. It was a terrible situation as they did not feed her or pay any attention to her needs. She huddled under an overturned table where she has waited for someone to help her for THREE WHOLE MONTHS! In all that time nobody took her home or extended her the simplest kindness. She waited through snow storms and heavy rains. She was wet and cold when we saw her and pitiful with her scrawny body and lifeless, dry coat. The people in the building said ‘take her - we don’t want her’, like she was trash to haul away.
At first, she did not want to be picked up or handled but soon she realized we meant her only the kindness she so longed for and she began to enjoy the attention. We took her to the vet and got an ok on her health so that we could bring her home with our cats. She has a long way to go to recover her health but I have already started to get her tangled matted fur cut out. She is patient and allows me to snip away, looking up at me with her sweet face. Bill and Magick are not too interested in yet another cat and continue to nap by the woodstove. The dogs expressed a vague interest but soon got bored and went to eat their supper. This is a good sign as it means she has been accepted into the clan.
It is so rewarding to be able to do something like this. A simple gesture like helping an animal nobody else wants, who is alone and helpless, is the most fulfilling and gratifying feeling in the world for me. It was wonderful to share this with Micki who was great support and a huge help in this latest adventure.
